The Tyndall National Institute is seeking to recruit a technician in the area of electron microscopy. The research strengths of the institute lie in the areas of electronics, photonics, materials and nanotechnologies. The establishment of a new microscopy facility at Tyndall is key to the development of the institute's research agenda.
Reporting to the Characterisation Technologist (Electron Microscopy), the successful candidate will oversee the installation, commissioning and operation of new electron microscopy facilities at Tyndall. Other duties will include:
1. Setup, operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and determination of service needs for the microscopy suite, which will include a transmission electron microscope, a high resolution scanning electron microscope and a dual-beam focused ion beam.
2. Sample preparation for microscopic examination and acquisition of high-resolution images as required.
3. Development and implementation of new specimen preparation techniques.
4. Review of literature as required and development of new techniques to improve image resolution.
5. Maintenance of workload record system (log system).
6. Purchasing and maintenance of laboratory equipment, e.g., polishers, coaters.
7. Training of selected users from research and fabrication groups.
8. Consultation and inspection of work in progress to ensure established standards of quality are met.
9. Provision for safe handling, use, storage and disposal of all chemicals and materials used in the microscopy suite.
10. Maintenance of supply inventory and reordering of consumables as necessary.
11. Work with customers of the facility to optimise its efficient and safe use and to produce results in an accurate and timely manner.
12. Performance of other duties as assigned.
The candidate will:
1. Have a qualification to at least degree level in science or engineering.
2. Have 2 or more years experience in electron microscopy, with particular experience in sample preparation.
3. Be a good team player.
4. Be self-motivated.
5. Have the ability to disseminate research material effectively.
6. Have excellent organisational and interpersonal skills.
This is a contract position for a period of 2 years funded by the Science Foundation Ireland.
